Apna Street video released from Beyond Borders as a tribute to the guitar maestro Larry Coryell

Apna Street is a track from the Beyond Borders Vol. 1 which was released in December 2020 by Dr. L. Subramaniam and features legendary jazz artists from across the world. The video for Apna Street has been made and released on April 2, 2021 as a tribute to the guitar maestro Larry Coryell on his 78th birth anniversary.

Violinist/composer and creator of the Global Fusion concept, Dr. L. Subramaniam has performed/recorded Carnatic Classical Music, Western Classical Music, Jazz, Fusion, and other genres. He has composed for and conducted orchestras, scored for films, collaborated with a wide range of musicians including many of the greatest from different genres of music including Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Stephane Grappelli, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Al Jarreau, and George Duke, among others.

He registered as a medical doctor before he decided to completely dedicate his life to music. He obtained a master’s degree in Western Classical music and composition. In addition to being awarded with many honorary doctorates for his contribution in the field of music, he has holds a Ph.D. for his research in the field of Raga and Harmony. He is also the founder/director of the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival (LGMF), the biggest global music festival in India, and the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts (SaPa), a premier institute for musical education. He is also the founder/chairman of the Lakshminarayana Global Centre of Excellence (LGCE) with his wife Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam. The LGCE in collaboration with Jain University and Vishwakarma University offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music.

Larry Coryell – Guitar

Larry was one of the first pioneers of the jazz-rock/fusion movement that began in the mid 1960’s.  He remained an influential and integral part of jazz music throughout his 50+ year career as a musician. Larry was born on April 2, 1943 in Galveston, Texas.  He moved to Richland, Washington when he was 7 and began playing guitar when he was 13. Prior to that he played piano under the instruction of his mother, Cora Coryell.  His first guitar teacher was the late jazz guitarist, John LaChapelle. John gave Larry his first dive into learning “jazz” guitar and Larry was hooked.

Most people didn’t know that Larry developed a serious passion for Opera during the last 10 years of his life.  Ever the pioneer, at age 65 he embarked on a new musical journey: learning and composing Opera.  War & Peace by Leo Tolstoy was his first Opera.  Anna Karenina by Tolstoy was his second.  His third opera was never completed, which was based on James Joyce’s, Ulysses.  It was scheduled to world premier in Dublin Ireland June 2018, Larry passed on February 19, 2017 and didn’t get to see Anna or Ulysses.

Bindu Subramaniam – Vocal

Bindu Subramaniam is a singer/songwriter, entrepreneur, author, and music educator. Bindu has been described as a “third generation prodigy” by the Hindustan Times, “a Bangalore woman changing the way children learn” by Femina Karnataka magazine and an “assured young soprano” by the Times of India.

Bindu first performed on stage in Norway when she was 12 – with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and global soloists, for a composition called Astral Symphony, written by her father Dr. L Subramaniam. Since then, she has composed and performed multiple original tracks. In 2011 she released her first solo album, Surrender, which was nominated for a  GiMA (Global Indian Music Awards) in the category of Best Pop/Rock Album. She won a GiMA for best fusion album (with Dr. L. Subramaniam) and honourable mentions at the 16th and 17th billboard world song contest. Bindu was also a finalist at the Unisong international songwriting contest and appeared on Verve Magazine’s list of 12 gen-next achievers.

She has a master’s degree in law from London University, a master’s certificate in songwriting and music business from Berklee College of Music, a Montessori diploma, an MPhil, and is currently working on a PhD in Music Education.
