How Restaurants Are Dishing Out Food For Needy in Covid Lockdown
2 min readSo while nurses, doctors, cops and bmc workers are all getting the laurels for being the corona warriors, there’s only empathy or sympathy being shown towards restaurant owners, whose business is currently down in the dumps, except for a few who operate as delivery units. But that’s not the real story. There are restaurant owners who are working just as hard and doing their bits in this fight against Corona by going out of their way and helping people out in times of need.
Despite taking the hit of losses month on month with the Govt. imposed a temporary shutdown, there’s one restaurant owner who has started a movement joined by as many as 50 restaurateurs, to help the needy with essentials. The person we are talking about is Mr. Satish Shetty, Managing Director of Peninsula Grand Hotel who has been supporting thousands of people since over a month and a half.
“This is the time to stand united and help people out and what good would we be in the food industry if food isn’t what we can help people out with,” says Mr. Shetty while adding “I had this thought of distributing groceries across Mumbai and discussed with my fellow restaurateurs if they’d be willing to join me and I was so glad that as many as 50 owners came together to help people out.”
So far, this motley group of restaurateurs have sent out kilos worth of grains and pulses, a whopping 22 tonnes of watermelons, rice etc. across many areas-Ghatkopar, Andheri East, Dahisar, Goregaon,Daddar in Mumbai. They have tied up with many NGOs and Social activists and have been distributing groceries as per their suggestions. They have also been helping out government officials who have been raising requests of on ground requirements. Interestingly, the restaurateurs are also helping in a unique way by distributing meal packages in the form of pre-fixed thalis that are being delivered contactless to the people in quarantine.
Well, if these people aren’t called Corona Warriors then who else?
